Le tour des Dentelles, 11,2km

Varied walk through the vineyards, forests and around the whimsical rocks of the Dentelles de Montmirail. This rock formation is located between the valley of the Rhone and the Ventoux and has a huge attraction for climbers. You will therefore see them climbing and abseiling in various places on the rocks. However, we follow the hiking trails and small roads. It is an easy walk and has few difficulties, this makes this walk, despite its length, very suitable to start the holiday.

The walk starts from Lafare (159 meters) and goes along the plane trees and the fountain towards Le Collet and Dentelles de Montmirail, indicated by signs. We cut off the quiet asphalt road for a moment via a narrow path along trees, green bushes and yellow broom. The path is slightly wider and the view is beautiful: in the foreground vines, in the background trees and rock walls and above a blue sky with a single cloud.

The route continues over the asphalt road to Le Collet (237 meters) and the Romanesque Chapelle Saint-Christophe (built in the early 12th century, restored in 1981). Between the rocks is a Cascade Saint Christophe, but unfortunately we have not heard or seen the waterfall. We did enjoy the view of the valley. The route continues on the asphalt until just past Domaine de Cassan, one of the many wine domains in this area.

Via a wide unpaved country road we easily walk to the Col de Cayron (394 meters), located in the Forêt Communale de Gigongas. Here is also an information board about the origin of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The country road gradually climbs until we reach the picnic area at the foot of the Rocher du Midi. A great location for a lunch break. Via a wide staircase through the forest we climb the Rocher du Midi, where a 360 degree panoramic view is our reward. There is also a table orientation, which lists the names of the surrounding villages and mountains. Even the Mont Ventoux can be seen in the distance in good weather. However, a fresh wind is blowing, so after taking some pictures we went down again.

On the country road we walk around the Dentelles de Montmirail and arrive at the Col d’Alsau. We descend via a narrow and stony path, the fresh wind slowly changes into stormy weather with occasional gusts of wind, it also becomes a lot colder. The sky above the Dentelles de Montmirail looks threatening, but apart from a few drops we still keep it dry. The view at the descent is beautiful, the rocks with the flowering yellow broom on the lower slopes. Always a beautiful sight in the landscape.

In this part of the hike we have also seen the climbers working on the steep vertical rock walls. Impressive. The forest path ends at a parking lot and via a quiet road we walk towards Lafare, while we have a nice view of the village of La Roque-Alric on the way. After crossing the Vallat de Fenouillet river, we turn left and walk back into the village of Lafare, looking back on a very successful and beautiful walk.
